Reading, reading, reading...

My reading list is ever growing (help!) and it looks like film literacy has now turned into the study of literacy in general, new literacy and media literacy.

In the last few weeks, I have really come to realise that neither the BFI nor anyone else is really certain whether 'film literacy' is about learning through or about film! Interestingly, most of the key studies where people have actually gathered some data about what happens with students when they get to interact with film watching and making in the classroom are concerned with both sides of the coin.

I want to try to take an as holistic approach as possible (saying that both aims only really work well when they are combined), although it seems that hard data and exam statistics are needed to make a political difference.

I have just bought my ticket to the MEA/BFI Conference 'Media and Film Education Futures' for the end of November and look forward to shedding more light on the subject there!
