Meeting the tribe

In his brilliant book The Element, Ken Robinson talks about how you only really have a chance to get very good at something if you are dedicated to it, talented in the area and also have people around you who love the same thing you do and who will push you to get better at it.

Unfortunately I am a little isolated in Bradford- the education department here is pretty small and I am working in big office surrounded by (lovely) people who are doing computer science. The nearest person who I can speak to about media literacy is really my supervisor Becky Parry, but she works at Leeds uni- 20 mins train ride away!

Yesterday I spent my afternoon in London, attending a talk by Ofcom on the new 'Children and Parents: Media Use and Attitudes' report and once again remembered who much I agree with Ken. meeting other people in the field is not just inspiring but also reminds you that you are not alone 'fighting for the cause'. I am a proper community animal and look forward to going to another conference at the BFI this weekend!
